What is a platonic relationship?

A platonic relationship is a type of relationship where the people involved have a close bond but don’t have any sexual and romantic relationship at all. This concept originated from the ideas of Plato, the ancient philosopher whose name inspired the term.

According to Plato, this form of love can bring people much closer to the divine ideal. Today, the use of this term focuses on the idea that people are just close friends, and nothing else.

The exact opposite of platonic relationships is romantic or sexual relationships. Although the term is often believed to apply only to friends of the opposite sex, this is also applicable even to same-sex friendships.
